This Handy Snap Bag is Very Versatile
A “Special Ingredient” Makes It Snap Open and Closed!
This cute little bag has a special feature that’s not apparent at first glance. Pull the triangular tabs and it snaps open. A little pressure and it snaps shut. That makes this clever bag useful for so many things.
Pieces of a metal measuring tape from the hardware store provide the snap action. Once you have those the bag is very easy to construct.
Plus, it can be made in many sizes. Once you see how it goes together you can easily size it up or down.
You also can quilt the layers together or leave them plain, and choose a box bottom so the bag will stand up or leave it flat. Give the bag whatever personality you want through fabric choices.

Cindy Cloward from Riley Blake Designs shows how the bag goes together in the following video. Have a pen and paper ready to write down the cutting dimensions.

Dana from Deedle & Thread has written up a tutorial for a similar bag. She goes into more detail about making the box bottom. Be patient as the tutorial can take a bit to load.
Thank you for this wonderful tutorial. I really enjoyed
watching it. Lois
Love this tutorial! Have made several bags in different sizes and rewatching this tutorial really helps if it’s been a while. Thanks so much.
If you sub belt loop(s) on one side, and line with plastic or vinyl these make EXCELLENT dog training treat bags!
Thank you for the Tutorial. My Mother and I will be making these for all of our friends, family and neighbors. What a wonderful idea.
Great presentation for gift wrapping! Who would have thunk tape meaaure! I’m guving this a go and I’m a novice when it comes to sewing machines.
I love these but made two changes. I stitch the pull tabs in place so it’s good and solid in the right spot. Secondly, I increase the lining over hang to 4.5″. Serves as two solutions…you can’t see the tape measure color and it’s very skimpy to top stitch keeping the pull tab edges in yet have enough room for your tape measure.
