Combine QAYG Blocks Easily with This Technique
Give Your Quilt a Polished Finish!
Quilt-as-you-go is a very popular technique. Once the blocks are sewn together the quilt is already quilted and ready for binding. There’s no need to quilt it by moving the whole quilt through your machine. Nice! (Learn more about QAYG here.)
One point in the process can sometimes be a bit tricky, however. What is the best and easiest way to combine the quilted blocks?
Front of the quilt.
Chris Dodsley from Made by ChrissieD has a neat, easy solution. Use a zig zag stitch to combine the blocks, then cover those seams. The finished quilt has a nicely polished look.
Back of the quilt.
She created strips for the front and slightly narrower strips for the back. Sew down the strips to the back first. Those seams will be covered on the front when the front strips are applied. Once completed, from the front the quilt appears to have topstitched or outline-quilted sashing.
Be sure to read all through the article, as she changed and refined her approach as she went along. For the quickest finish, stitch together all of the blocks and make strips to span the full length and width.

The only time one must use bias-cut strips with the Clover strip makers is if the folded strips will be used to make curves. Strips cut on grain work fine for the application mentioned in this article.
