Store More in Less Space and See What You Have at a Glance!

Have you been wondering how to KonMarie your stash? If you’re not familiar, Marie Kondo’s ingenious de-cluttering methods are immensely popular and produce lasting results (learn more from her book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing).

But how do her methods apply to fabric? The short explanation is to find another home for fabrics that don’t spark joy for you, then use Marie’s folding method for what’s left. You’ll be able to store a lot more fabric in a smaller space and be able to see what you have at a glance.

In the following video, Stephanie from Quilt Addicts Anonymous will show you how to fold and store various cuts of fabric as Marie would – and discusses the benefits of doing so. The baskets she uses for storage are inexpensive and can be found at Target.

The small basket (3.91″ H x 7.47″ W x 9.81″ D) will hold 100 fat eighths, 50 fat quarters and 25 half yard cuts. (You’ll find a set of 4 similarly sized baskets here that are slightly less expensive.)

The medium basket ( 5.09″ W x 11.16″ W x 13.69″ D) will hold 30 one yard cuts.

You may be able to find similarly sized baskets at the dollar store.

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest has featured many patterns from vendors participating in the Craftsy Marketplace, most of which have been deleted by Craftsy. It's going to take awhile for us to hunt down new sources for those patterns. In the meantime there are many links to patterns on our site that no longer work. We apologize if this article contains one or more of those links and appreciate your patience while we straighten things out. Thank you!

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest does not sell or otherwise provide patterns directly. We showcase patterns and projects from various vendors, bloggers and other sources. Please make a note of where you access a pattern (the link in the yellow box toward the end of each Quilting Digest article). That way you can contact Support for that source if you have downloading problems or other issues. Thank you!
