5 Paper Piecing Patterns We Love
Paper piecing, also known as foundation piecing, is a method where fabric is sewn to paper (or another foundation) in order to create a quilt block. Once the block is finished, the paper is torn away from the back (you’ll find instructions here).
Paper piecing allows for more intricate quilt blocks than what can usually be achieved with standard piecing. Tricky corners and small shapes are no longer hard to handle.
Several paper-pieced blocks have caught our eye recently. Here are a few we fell in love with.
The following blocks can be combined into quilts or will stand alone as wall hangings, on tote bags or for the center of the table. All templates are free, except for the last one.
Twinkling Tulip
This charming pattern was designed by Jen at Quilting Jewel. We love how one tulip can be used as a 5″ square, or 4 can be combined to create a 10″ square with a star in the center.
Lone Starburst
Anna at Six White Horses created this stunning foundation paper pieced star.

Vintage Sewing Machine
Charise (of Charise Creates) has created two variations of a vintage sewing machine block. While both variations produce 12″ blocks, the first is simpler and easier to piece than the second.

This charming template, also by Charise, is not free but we think it’s well worth the small cost. Play dress designer and create your own darling vintage dresses!
