If you’ve been quilting for long, chances are you’ve already used fat quarters, jelly roll strips or charm squares. Those and other pre-cuts have many benefits, but there are also some things to watch out for.
Karen Brown from Just Get It Done Quilts has created a very informative video about pre-cuts. She covers how pre-cuts are made, how to deal with those pinked edges, how they are priced and much more.
One point she makes is that pre-cuts may not be the best choice for certain fabrics, such as larger scale prints with motifs you want to feature. You’ll find several more great insights in the video below.

One thing we question is that she says the size of each pre-cut is supposed be measured at the valley of the pinked edges. Other sources say it’s at the peaks.
It may be a good idea to measure a few pieces from each pack before you start sewing so you know where to stitch to get the correct finished size.
And, sometimes a pack of pre-cuts can use a little help to ensure that they sew up to the correct width. The tips in this article can be used for all pre-cuts.
