Customize This Cute Bag for Any Season
It’s Great for Orphan Blocks!
This cute bag is great for October but can easily be customized however you want. The bats are created with machine reverse applique, a fun technique that lends itself to many designs.
Substitute a pumpkin for a bag to enjoy all fall. Or use an orphan quilt block (or two – one for the back) or a favorite fusible-appliqued design for a bag in any style.
The bag itself is simple to construct and provides so many design options. Once you decide on the block(s) you’ll use and the color theme, enjoy how quickly it goes together.
Instructions provided by Art Gallery Fabrics result in a bag that is about 11 1/2″ square. They’re easily adjusted to work with a 12 1/2″ unfinished block (or one of any size). Simply cut the back, backing, and lining pieces to fit the block you chose.
A video showing how to make a block with the reverse-appliqued bats can be found here. While it does not specify the width of the strips used for the panel that peeks through the bats, choose a width you like and sew enough of them together to create a pieced panel that will fit your block. You’ll find the template for the bats here.
The cute bats can also be finished into a wall hanging, table topper, or even used in a quilt. They can also be fusible-appliqued to a background for a different look than that of reverse applique.
