It’s Easy, Quick, and Fun!

Do you dislike the tedious marking usually required before you begin free-motion quilting? Are you unable to follow the lines as precisely as you want? Or maybe you’re a free spirit and prefer to color outside the lines. If any of these apply to you, chances are you’ll love this creative method for quilting a quilt.

The process requires minimal marking, all drawn by hand in a free-form manner. The stitching itself is free-form as well, yet the results are artistic, charming, and completed more quickly than with other methods.

Laura from Sew Very Easy demonstrates the process in the video below. First, she quilted from the back rather than the front, giving herself a blank canvas to work with. Then she drew simple daisies without measuring or worrying too much about spacing and consistent shapes. Watch how she did it and see the fun results in the video.

This approach can be used with many shapes: leaves, spider webs, candy canes, stars, tulips, balloons, and more. Kids’ coloring books are great sources for simple easy-to-draw shapes.

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest has featured many patterns from vendors participating in the Craftsy Marketplace, most of which have been deleted by Craftsy. It's going to take awhile for us to hunt down new sources for those patterns. In the meantime there are many links to patterns on our site that no longer work. We apologize if this article contains one or more of those links and appreciate your patience while we straighten things out. Thank you!

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest does not sell or otherwise provide patterns directly. We showcase patterns and projects from various vendors, bloggers and other sources. Please make a note of where you access a pattern (the link in the yellow box toward the end of each Quilting Digest article). That way you can contact Support for that source if you have downloading problems or other issues. Thank you!
