This Simple Technique Works with Newly Cut Fabric and Scraps!

Do you dread sewing a lot of small squares together? While it can be a good exercise in perfecting your piecing, there’s an easier way that can save you from having to tear out mismatched corners.

A couple of easy steps ensure that every square is aligned perfectly. You’ll also have a strong base for sewing them together without them stretching out of shape or wiggling out of place.

The secret is lightweight fusible interfacing (like the one found here). Rather than piece squares the standard way, lay them out on fusible interfacing and fuse them in position for sewing.

This works with small squares of any size and is a great way to sew together scraps that may not be exactly square. Lay the see-through interfacing on your cutting mat and use the lines from the mat to guide you as you’re placing the squares on the interfacing. This will ensure that the rows and columns are straight.

Monica Curry has provided an excellent tutorial to get you started. While it was created to demonstrate how to make a 12″ square Checkerboard block, the technique will work any time you need to piece a lot of small squares.

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest has featured many patterns from vendors participating in the Craftsy Marketplace, most of which have been deleted by Craftsy. It's going to take awhile for us to hunt down new sources for those patterns. In the meantime there are many links to patterns on our site that no longer work. We apologize if this article contains one or more of those links and appreciate your patience while we straighten things out. Thank you!

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest does not sell or otherwise provide patterns directly. We showcase patterns and projects from various vendors, bloggers and other sources. Please make a note of where you access a pattern (the link in the yellow box toward the end of each Quilting Digest article). That way you can contact Support for that source if you have downloading problems or other issues. Thank you!
