Color Codes Tell You at a Glance What Size and Type a Needle Is!
Most quilters we know use Schmetz needles in their machines. These needles consistently perform well and are easy to get just about anywhere.
Have you ever noticed the colored bands on Schmetz needles? There are two bands that tell you at a glance what type and size a needle is. No more guessing what to use that needle for.
The following guide from Schmetz is handy to have on hand. Click on the image below to reach a version to print out and hang next to your sewing machine.
Notice that Universal needles have just one band that indicates the size.
A more in depth guide is available from Craftsy that shows you what sizes each of the types of needles come in. It also explains the color coding system.
Read the needle guide here.
Craftsy also makes a chart available that you can print for your sewing room.
PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest has featured many patterns from vendors participating in the Craftsy Marketplace, most of which have been deleted by Craftsy. It's going to take awhile for us to hunt down new sources for those patterns. In the meantime there are many links to patterns on our site that no longer work. We apologize if this article contains one or more of those links and appreciate your patience while we straighten things out. Thank you!
PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest does not sell or otherwise provide patterns directly. We showcase patterns and projects from various vendors, bloggers and other sources. Please make a note of where you access a pattern (the link in the yellow box toward the end of each Quilting Digest article). That way you can contact Support for that source if you have downloading problems or other issues. Thank you!
