8 Tips to “Fix” a Leaky Iron!

Does your iron tend to sputter and dribble when you’re using steam? Or does it leak after you’ve been using it for a while? Or, heaven forbid, have you ever had a new iron leak the first time you used it? Quilters need good reliable irons to produce the best quilts, and a leaking iron can cause all kinds of problems, not to mention aggravation.

Fortunately, there are several things you can do to prevent an iron from leaking. Understanding the anatomy of an iron is a great start, as that’s where leaks begin. As it turns out, steam irons are naturally leaky contraptions.

How to Prevent an Iron from Leaking

Karen Brown from Just Get It Done Quilts explains why and goes on in her very informative video (below) to provide several tips for preventing leaks. Of course, you can sidestep the issue entirely by spritzing fabric with water using a spray bottle instead of using the steam setting on your iron. However, you shouldn’t have to do that, unless that’s what you prefer.

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest has featured many patterns from vendors participating in the Craftsy Marketplace, most of which have been deleted by Craftsy. It's going to take awhile for us to hunt down new sources for those patterns. In the meantime there are many links to patterns on our site that no longer work. We apologize if this article contains one or more of those links and appreciate your patience while we straighten things out. Thank you!

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest does not sell or otherwise provide patterns directly. We showcase patterns and projects from various vendors, bloggers and other sources. Please make a note of where you access a pattern (the link in the yellow box toward the end of each Quilting Digest article). That way you can contact Support for that source if you have downloading problems or other issues. Thank you!
