Just Stitch The Finished Hexies Together for a Completed Project!
Some quilters like making hexies and some don’t. They’re fiddly and require precision. Plus, once they’re made you need to applique them down to a background or carefully stitch them together into a quilt top.
These quilt-as-you-go hexies still require precision, but once they’re done they already have batting and backing and are ready to go. Just stitch them together into a completed project.
The quilter at Silly Goose Quilts made a table mat with hers. You could make a mug rug, placemats or even a lap quilt. There are so many things you can do with these.
Each individual hexagon is essentially a mini quilt, with binding brought around from the back. You can make them as small or large as you like.
The tutorial, by Silly Goose Quilts, includes a template. Print it full size onto a standard 8 1/2″ x 11″ piece of paper for a finished hexie of about 3 1/2″ (you know the printed version is correct when there’s a 1″ space between the inner and outer hexies).
In the instructions, she refers to batting as wadding. Once the edges are folded, pressed, and basted in place you can sew down the edges by hand or machine. Machine stitching will go through all layers, essentially quilting them at the same time.
PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest has featured many patterns from vendors participating in the Craftsy Marketplace, most of which have been deleted by Craftsy. It's going to take awhile for us to hunt down new sources for those patterns. In the meantime there are many links to patterns on our site that no longer work. We apologize if this article contains one or more of those links and appreciate your patience while we straighten things out. Thank you!
PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest does not sell or otherwise provide patterns directly. We showcase patterns and projects from various vendors, bloggers and other sources. Please make a note of where you access a pattern (the link in the yellow box toward the end of each Quilting Digest article). That way you can contact Support for that source if you have downloading problems or other issues. Thank you!
