Scalloped Edges Finish This Sweet Baby Rag Quilt

Use the Same Technique for a Throw or Bed Quilt!
Rag quilts are fun, cozy, and perfect for babies. This one has a charming scalloped edge that’s just as easy to make as the rest of the quilt.
Rag quilt construction is straightforward but different from making a regular quilt. The seam allowances are wider and appear on the top so they can be clipped to ravel and produce the rag.
Choose fabrics that ravel easily in the wash, such as homespun, flannel, and quilting cottons. The looser the weave, the easier the edges will ravel and produce the fluffy rag.
Sew4Home provides excellent instructions that work not just with this quilt but with any rag quilt you may have in mind. Spring-loaded clippers like these make clipping the seam allowances easier on the hands.
Enlarged to better show the rag edges.
The body of the quilt is made from 6″ squares. You can cut them from the provided template or with your rotary cutter (perhaps with a pinking blade since pinking shears are recommended for cutting the fabric for this project). You can also purchase 6″ homespun squares like those found here.

Once completed, the baby quilt designed by Alicia Thommas is 35″ x 35″. Add more squares to the center for a larger throw-sized quilt.
