These Cute Pincushions Have a Vintage Feel

They’re Also Quick and Fun to Make!

Cute bird and chicken pincushions seem ready to roll on their wooden spool “wheels.” While they don’t really roll, they are reminiscent of vintage toys and fun additions to the sewing room.

The bird and chicken are easy to make and go together quickly. Start with scraps in fabrics you love.

Birds of a Feather Pincushions

Old wooden spools are perfect for this project (with or without thread), but new ones work nicely too (find them here). New spools can be stained to look old, if you prefer that look. Dress up the spools, if you want, by wrapping them with embroidery thread, ribbon or strips of fabric.

The finished pincushions, designed by Chris Malone, are the following sizes:

  • Bird Pincushion – 4 1/2″ x 5 1/4″
  • Chicken Pincushion – 4 1/2″ x 6 1/4″

The “Birds of a Feather Pincushions” pattern can be found in More Weekend Sewing.

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest has featured many patterns from vendors participating in the Craftsy Marketplace, most of which have been deleted by Craftsy. It's going to take awhile for us to hunt down new sources for those patterns. In the meantime there are many links to patterns on our site that no longer work. We apologize if this article contains one or more of those links and appreciate your patience while we straighten things out. Thank you!

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest does not sell or otherwise provide patterns directly. We showcase patterns and projects from various vendors, bloggers and other sources. Please make a note of where you access a pattern (the link in the yellow box toward the end of each Quilting Digest article). That way you can contact Support for that source if you have downloading problems or other issues. Thank you!
