Turn an Old Armoire Into a Sewing Center
All it Takes is Imagination and (Maybe) Light Carpentry Skills!
Do you have an old armoire that’s just taking up space? How about one of those tall entertainment centers? Chances are, with a little ingenuity and minor alterations you can turn it into a compact sewing center that keeps everything out of sight when not in use.
If you don’t already have a cabinet on hand, look around at yard sales and resale shops for an inexpensive one to convert. Regardless of which cabinet you’re considering be sure to measure carefully.
At the very least, you’ll need an area large enough to stow your machine with the doors closed, as well as room to add a fold-down or pull-out table. Drawers and shelves can be used to store tools and supplies.
There are other factors to consider as well. Ken Wingard from Hallmark Channel does a nice job in the following video of outlining what to look for when selecting a cabinet (as well as how he began his conversion).

In the next video, Ken finishes up his project. You may be surprised by how simple it was to create his craft center, which could also be used as a dedicated sewing center.

You’ll also want to take into account your skills when deciding on a cabinet. Some will require more work than others, and some may need basic carpentry skills to complete. This cabinet from Cottage Hill features a clever fold-out table add-on. Learn more here.
Every cabinet is different so look at examples for ideas of how best to use the space. The following cabinet from Remodelicious employs several creative storage ideas. See more photos and learn how it was done here.
