Turn a Swoon Block Into a Table Topper

This Tutorial Works with Most Oversized Quilt Blocks!

Swoon blocks are quite popular with busy quilters, but what are they exactly?

The term, when used in general terms, refers to over-sized quilt blocks. Typically, they’re 24″ square, although we’ve seen them start at 16″ and go much larger.

The original, and most popular, Swoon block is from Thimble Blossoms, although we’ve seen several block patterns called Swoon blocks.

The two-foot-square size makes one block perfect for a table topper (just about any quilt block, oversized or not, will work, as well).

You can simply bind and quilt the finished block and use it on your table, or wall, as Clover And Violet has done here with the Swoon block.

You can also embellish the quilt block and give it an interesting shape, like this one from The Crafty Quilter.Swoon Table Topper Tutorial

Notice how nice that shape looks on a round or octagonal table! It would also look great as a wall quilt.

Producing a topper of that shape is really quite simple. The Crafty Quilter has put together a great tutorial.

She also put together a nice tutorial about binding inside corners, which you’ll need to do in order to finish off her extended quilt block. You’ll find that tutorial here.

How to Bind Inside Corners

Patterns for Swoon blocks can be found in various places around the Internet. Or, purchase the original Swoon block pattern, the one used in The Crafty Quilter tutorial, from Thimble Blossoms. It’s available at the link below as both a paper pattern and PDF download.

You can also enlarge a favorite quilt block to 24″ x 24″.

To adapt the table topper tutorial to another block pattern, simply size the “outrigger” triangles to fit with the block’s design. In this case, the added triangle spans two points of the star, looking right at home there. (That will make more sense once you view the tutorial!)

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest has featured many patterns from vendors participating in the Craftsy Marketplace, most of which have been deleted by Craftsy. It's going to take awhile for us to hunt down new sources for those patterns. In the meantime there are many links to patterns on our site that no longer work. We apologize if this article contains one or more of those links and appreciate your patience while we straighten things out. Thank you!

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest does not sell or otherwise provide patterns directly. We showcase patterns and projects from various vendors, bloggers and other sources. Please make a note of where you access a pattern (the link in the yellow box toward the end of each Quilting Digest article). That way you can contact Support for that source if you have downloading problems or other issues. Thank you!
