Make It a Jelly Roll Day
Get Started with Free Patterns and Tips for Working with Jelly Rolls!
Moda, the inventor of jelly rolls, has designated the 3rd Saturday in September of every year as National Sew A Jelly Roll Day. They encourage quilters to set the day aside to make something with a jelly roll from their stash. While you’re encouraged to join the festivities on that day, any day can be a jelly roll day!
A jelly roll roll contains 40 strips measuring 2-1/2″ x 40-45″. Typically, there will be one or more strips from each fabric in a particular fabric line.
Jelly rolls are not only convenient to work with, but they provide a coordinated collection of fabrics that make it easy to choose fabric for a quilt. While Moda invented jelly rolls, most fabric companies now offer them as well, while calling them something else (the number of strips may vary from Moda’s standard of 40).
Over the years many quilt patterns have been developed that feature jelly rolls. If you’re ready to get sewing, you may find just the right pattern in the following collection of quilts that require one jelly roll.
Jelly rolls can be a bit linty, and you’ll need to remove the fold and get them to lay flat before you begin piecing. Most quilters don’t pre-wash jelly roll strips (or other pre-cuts) but you can pre-shrink them a bit by dipping them in starch.
If you’d like to join in the celebration, here’s all you need to do:
- Have fun sewing.
- Make something with a Jelly Roll or two.
- SHARE pictures of what you’re doing to Instagram or Facebook with the hashtag #projectjellyroll2023
You may even win a giveaway by posting photos of your progress using that hashtag.
And, remember, any day can be a jelly roll day!
