Prevent Thread from Tangling When Hand Sewing

| Two Tips to Make Thread Glide Smoothly Through Fabric!
Does your thread tend to tangle when you’re hand sewing? There’s an easy solution for minimizing snarls, a dreaded development whenever you’re hand stitching.
In the following video Ruth Ciemnoczolowski shows us the needle threading tip she learned from her Mother and Grandmother. She also adds a nice, handy tip of her own for conditioning the thread. The two together make for smooth hand sewing with few if any snarls. Nice!

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest has featured many patterns from vendors participating in the Craftsy Marketplace, most of which have been deleted by Craftsy. It's going to take awhile for us to hunt down new sources for those patterns. In the meantime there are many links to patterns on our site that no longer work. We apologize if this article contains one or more of those links and appreciate your patience while we straighten things out. Thank you!
PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest does not sell or otherwise provide patterns directly. We showcase patterns and projects from various vendors, bloggers and other sources. Please make a note of where you access a pattern (the link in the yellow box toward the end of each Quilting Digest article). That way you can contact Support for that source if you have downloading problems or other issues. Thank you!

Great tips! I will use these. Thanks!
Thank you very helpful
Lovely, charming.
I also condition w/ bees wax.
My mom taught me that too. But not the lip balm part, just the threading the needle part. And I do think of her whenever I thread a needle.
I learned the same method, but was told if you’re left handed to do the opposite end…knot the end that comes off the spool, and use the end that you just cut to thread the needle. Does anyone know if this is true?
In the video she implies that the end that first comes off the spool is the one you want to go through the fabric first, as that works best with the twist of the thread. Based on that explanation, it doesn’t seem like it will make any difference of you’re right or left handed. Place the knot on the end where you cut the thread from the spool. I could be wrong, but that’s how I interpret her instructions. I’d love to hear what others think.
Thank you. I will use this method the next time I sew a binding to my quilt.
