How to Sew a 4-Patch Block from 2 Pre-cut Squares

Are you working on a project that requires making a four-patch block from two pre-cut squares? One way is to cut the pre-cuts into four squares and sew them together. Or, use this method for better results.
Not only is it easier, you’ll find it goes faster, too. The method can be used with pre-cut squares of any size.
Start with two 5″ charm squares for a 4 1/2″ four-patch block (4″ finished). Two 10″ layer cakes squares will yield a 9 1/2″ block, or 9″ finished.
Lindsay Connor shows you how it’s done in an excellent tutorial. She starts with 5″ squares and recommends trimming them to a 4 1/4″ unfinished block. However, you can create 4 1/2″ unfinished blocks if you’re careful to use the peaks of the pinked edges as the start of your scant 1/4″ seam (measure the squares first to make sure).
