Get Accurate Strip Sets with a Little Prep Work!

In an ideal world every jelly roll strip will measure exactly 2 1/2″ from tip to tip of the pinked edges. Sadly, they often don’t.

In some cases that may not matter. In others that variation in width can create problems as you’re combining pieces cut from strips and strip sets.

Avoid Problems When Sewing with Jelly Roll Strips

The solution is to do a little prep work before you begin sewing. Start with measuring the width of the strips.

Samantha from Aqua Paisley has written an excellent article explaining how to achieve the most accuracy with jelly roll strips. She tells you how to measure and what to do if your strip widths are a bit off (in most cases they’ll be a bit wide).

She then goes on to explain how best to sew and press strip sets. Even experienced quilters are sure to learn something from her insights.

Plus, for anyone who’s wondering, create your scant quarter-inch seam by measuring from the peaks of the pinked edges (not the valleys). That’s true for all pre-cuts – although you should measure to make sure.

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest has featured many patterns from vendors participating in the Craftsy Marketplace, most of which have been deleted by Craftsy. It's going to take awhile for us to hunt down new sources for those patterns. In the meantime there are many links to patterns on our site that no longer work. We apologize if this article contains one or more of those links and appreciate your patience while we straighten things out. Thank you!

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest does not sell or otherwise provide patterns directly. We showcase patterns and projects from various vendors, bloggers and other sources. Please make a note of where you access a pattern (the link in the yellow box toward the end of each Quilting Digest article). That way you can contact Support for that source if you have downloading problems or other issues. Thank you!
