Make a Pretty Bag From Selvages
Or Use Skinny Strips of Fabric!
Put selvages to good use in this pretty little bag. It can be made with thin strips of fabric, too, if you prefer, but it will be fun made up in those fabric edges that often get discarded.
While it was designed for toiletries, the bag can be used for many other things as well. It also makes a lovely gift.
The bag itself is simple to make but it does take some effort to get the selvages ready to use and made into fabric for the bag’s body. The designer, Petro, provides two different ways to make the fabric. The processes also work with thin strips of fabric.
She doesn’t say in the tutorial but based on the photos it appears that she used the fusible fleece method for making the selvage fabric. That produces fabric panels that are similar to quilt-as-you-go, with the fleece providing structure for the bag (and no additional batting needed).
For the bag you’ll need three pieces of selvage fabric of the following sizes:
- 11 1/2″ by 9 1/2″
- 11 1/2″ by 2 1/4″
- 11 1/2″ by 12″
You can use selvage fabric in other projects as well. Her tutorial is a great intro to working with selvages.
The size of the completed bag is not provided but it appears to be about 11″ across the top.
