The cost of quilting tools and supplies can add up quickly, making it so tempting to save here and there by purchasing less expensive knockoffs. But is it worth it?

Carolina Moore has created a very informative video about fake rulers. In it, she compares brand-name rulers against their knockoff counterparts (keep in mind that her findings can also apply to other quilting tools).

The results are eye-opening and very thought-provoking. For example, she emphasizes how rulers that are slightly off can make you doubt your quilting skills.

Are Knockoff Rulers Worth the Lower Cost?

Plus, fake rulers have a direct economic impact on the quilters who originally designed them. While the originals were designed to produce great results and have been repeatedly tested, the quilters who designed them make nothing from the knockoffs.

It’s important to keep this in mind when purchasing rulers and many other quilter-designed tools and supplies. Who do you want to support? Designers need you to buy their originals so they can continue designing excellent tools.

Carolina also explains how to determine which rulers are the originals and which are fakes. Her guidelines can also apply to many other quilting tools.

In some cases, the knockoff tools are as good as (or better than) more expensive versions produced by name brands. When buying online, be sure to carefully read through the reviews to determine whether an item is worth the cost savings.

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest has featured many patterns from vendors participating in the Craftsy Marketplace, most of which have been deleted by Craftsy. It's going to take awhile for us to hunt down new sources for those patterns. In the meantime there are many links to patterns on our site that no longer work. We apologize if this article contains one or more of those links and appreciate your patience while we straighten things out. Thank you!

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest does not sell or otherwise provide patterns directly. We showcase patterns and projects from various vendors, bloggers and other sources. Please make a note of where you access a pattern (the link in the yellow box toward the end of each Quilting Digest article). That way you can contact Support for that source if you have downloading problems or other issues. Thank you!
