Innovative Construction Makes It Easy to Sew Together!

This lovely umbrella is made from a modified Dresden Plate block. The block can be used in a quilt, runner, wall hanging, pillow cover, and more.

An innovative technique for piecing Dresden blocks that omits the need to deal with bias edges simplifies construction. Joanna Figueroa’s technique uses a template to mark stitching lines, which are sewn before the fan shapes are cut out.

The umbrella shape is created by applying the handle to the background using fusible applique. The Dresden umbrella is then stitched in place.

Nicola Dodd from Cake Stand Quilts suggests using background pieces that are either 8½ ” x 10½” or 10½” x 12½”.  A square background will also work.

You’ll also need the template found here.

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest does not sell or otherwise provide patterns directly. We showcase patterns and projects from various vendors, bloggers and other sources. Please make a note of where you access a pattern (the link in the yellow box toward the end of each Quilting Digest article). That way you can contact Support for that source if you have downloading problems or other issues. Thank you!
