How to Change the Size of FPP Quilt Blocks

Plus a Free Block Pattern!
Foundation paper piecing (FPP) allows you to make complex blocks that would be difficult to construct with standard piecing. There are so many beautiful blocks to choose from that it pays to have this technique in your skillset. You’ll find excellent FPP instructions here.
In addition to the crisp, precise results achieved with FPP, blocks can easily be made larger or smaller. Simply print the block templates at the size you want using a printer or copier.
It’s easy to calculate how to adjust the print size. Typically, you’d print the templates at 100%, but an easy formula can be used to change that percentage to achieve the block size you want. Just remember to adjust the 1/4″ seams on the templates before you start using them.
Kristina from Center Street Quilts provides excellent instructions for adjusting the size of FPP blocks in the following tutorial.
The pattern for the “Tiny Log Cabin” block shown in the tutorial is available here (2″, 3″, 4″, 5″, and 6″ squares).
Kristina’s “Mod Log Cabin” block is perfect for showcasing fussy-cut motifs. It’s also a great block for trying out FPP if you’re new to the technique, and for experimenting with changing block sizes. You’ll find the free pattern for 4″ x 4″ and 6″ x 6″ finished blocks at the following link.
