Make a Charming Autumn Hot Pad from Scraps
There’s a Matching Runner, Too!
Leftover autumn prints are perfect for this charming hot pad. It’s nicely sized to protect surfaces from hot dishes from the oven. It can also be used as a potholder or mug rug.
Plus, its personality will change depending on the fabrics and leaf-vein colors you choose. This is a fun project and simple to make, so don’t be surprised if you make more than one just to try different color combos.
The hot pad was inspired by leftover pieces from a matching table runner (shown below – you’ll find the free tutorial here). Instructions are provided for using runner leftovers as well as for making the hot pad on its own.

Bias tape was used for the binding, but you can cut your own to match whatever fabric you use for the leaf veins. Be sure to add an insulating material, such as Insul-Bright, along with the batting.
The leaf designed by Staci from Crafty Staci is about 11″ L x 7″ W.
