It Will Be Pretty in Christmas Prints, Too!

Turn scraps into pretty hot pads to brighten your kitchen every summer or any time. Patriotic red, white, and blue are so charming, but these will be just as pretty in any color combination (we’re thinking Christmas!).

They’re also simple to make and go together quickly. The designer says that it takes her about 45 minutes to complete one.

Hot Pad Tutorial

Start with a 4″ hexagon and add 2 1/2″ strips of fabric to build out the shape in a Quilt-As-You-Go technique. Then, use an 8 1/2” round plate to cut a circle.

Insul-Bright batting provides heat-proofing, and the designer used the 4” acrylic hexagon template from this set (but any template will work). The fusible-appliqué star can be cut from any template found on Google (there are several to choose from herethis one looks promising). While the size is not specified, it looks like the star is about 2 1/2″ across. Jumbo rick rack is a fun finishing touch.

The completed hot pad is about 8 1/2” across.

Designer Eilene Johnson from Simply Eilene has provided a quick video tutorial. You’ll find notes in the right sidebar.

Note for Non-Instagram Users: Click the link to the video. If you get an Instagram screen encouraging you to sign up, click “Open Instagram.” If the next screen shows a variety of photos, click on “Done” in the upper left corner. This should deliver you to Eilene’s tutorial.

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest has featured many patterns from vendors participating in the Craftsy Marketplace, most of which have been deleted by Craftsy. It's going to take awhile for us to hunt down new sources for those patterns. In the meantime there are many links to patterns on our site that no longer work. We apologize if this article contains one or more of those links and appreciate your patience while we straighten things out. Thank you!

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest does not sell or otherwise provide patterns directly. We showcase patterns and projects from various vendors, bloggers and other sources. Please make a note of where you access a pattern (the link in the yellow box toward the end of each Quilting Digest article). That way you can contact Support for that source if you have downloading problems or other issues. Thank you!
