Make a Pretty Heart from a Log Cabin Block
It Makes a Lovely Gift Any Time of the Year!
While this charming heart is called a coaster by the designer, it’s large enough to be used as a snack mat, pot holder, or hot pad (add a layer or two of Insul-Bright for heat-proofing). It’s very simple to make and a great use of 2″ wide scraps. The completed heart is a lovely gift for many types of occasions.
You can also vary the size for a larger or smaller heart. A piece of 8 1/2” square cardstock was used to cut out the heart template, so the finished heart shown here is slightly smaller than that.
Designer Eilene Johnson from Simply Eilene demonstrates how she made the heart in a quick video tutorial. Notice how her free-form process yields beautiful results. Yours will be just as lovely, even if it looks slightly different.
Notice the details to the right of the video that outline the materials needed and the construction process. If you’re uncomfortable cutting out a heart without a template, check Google for a free printable template of a similar size (this search is for an 8″ heart).
