Painting Barn Quilts Brings This Retiree “Real Joy”
He Didn’t Start Until he Was Nearly 90!
As he was approaching his 90th birthday, retired dentist Burgess Marshbanks was looking for something different to do. His quilter wife suggested he paint her a barn quilt.
Having no artistic experience the project presented a number of challenges for Burgess, including what paints to buy and brushes to use. But in the process, the chore became a joy, then a passion, and finally a mission.
Every barn quilt he completes is given away to someone who he feels deserves recognition. “My joy is painting the patterns, and then giving them away.”

As Burgess encourages toward the end of the video:
“Branch out, do something different, be adventurous, be daring.”
