Play with Colors and Values for This Striking Quilt

It’s a Great Project to Learn More About Values!

Create a stunning quilt that appears three-dimensional with a large combination of low-contrast prints. Notice that while the colors move the eye around the quilt, it’s the values that create the three-dimensional effect.

Choose between the crib size, which will be striking on a wall, and the throw to drape over the sofa. Both will be beautiful, eye-catching, and sure to attract attention.

Fuse Box Quilt Pattern

Start with 2 1/2″ jelly roll strips and divide them into darks, mediums, and lights. Keep in mind that values are relative and can be any of those depending on what they’re placed next to. The quilt photo illustrates many examples, especially in the medium range, of fabrics that, depending on the situation, could be considered light, medium, or dark. Those contrasts within each value category add interest and intrigue to the quilt.

Designer Sarah Furrer, from Studio 180 Design, recommends the Star 60 Tool for this project. Other 60-degree triangle rulers will also work.

Instructions are provided for quilts in the following sizes:

  • 41” x 58 ½”
  • 65” x 69”

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest does not sell or otherwise provide patterns directly. We showcase patterns and projects from various vendors, bloggers and other sources. Please make a note of where you access a pattern (the link in the yellow box toward the end of each Quilting Digest article). That way you can contact Support for that source if you have downloading problems or other issues. Thank you!
