It’s So Easy and Fun to Do!

Do you have old t-shirts that are still too good to throw away? Even those with holes can be used to make a t-shirt rug.

This is an easy, freeform project that can produce rugs of any size. You don’t need to be precise or do much preplanning to create a charming rug.

Turn Old T-Shirts Into a Charming Rug

First, once you’ve chosen the shirts you want to use, cut them into continuous strips. Six shirts cut into roughly 2″ wide strips (about 41 feet total) were used for the rug shown here. You’ll find a quick video from My Poppet showing you how to cut the strips here.

Braid the strips together, tying on additional strips as needed. We love how the designer did this step during a road trip and appreciate her tip for securing one end while you braid.

Then sew the strips into a rug shape using your machine’s zigzag stitch. Notice how the designer started hers so it would produce an oval rug, and note how she oriented the starting point so the rug is easy to feed through the machine as it grows.

The completed rug, designed and made by Staci of Crafty Staci, is about 17″ x 24”. You can make yours any size you want.

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest does not sell or otherwise provide patterns directly. We showcase patterns and projects from various vendors, bloggers and other sources. Please make a note of where you access a pattern (the link in the yellow box toward the end of each Quilting Digest article). That way you can contact Support for that source if you have downloading problems or other issues. Thank you!
