The Process Works with Larger Quilts, Too!

Winter’s chilly weather makes us want extra cozy, and chenille quilts are the perfect remedy. This time-honored method is a wonderful way to produce a comfy quilt for winter.

Laura from Sew Very Easy shows us how to make a chenille quilt using fabric panels. We love how the printed design looks when she’s done.

The following video walks you through all the steps. A chenille cutter (get one here) speeds the process but you can cut with scissors if you prefer. For the panels, Fat Quarter Shop has a nice selection to choose from (see them here) as does Amazon (found here).

Now that you understand how to “chenille” a quilt, you may want to think larger. Lauren Lang has written an excellent article about creating a chenille backing for a whole cloth baby or lap quilt. She suggests flannel for the backing, for an extra comfy quilt.

The front can be simple piecing, as well, since the chenille is on the back. You can also use regular quilting cotton instead of flannel, and vary the color with each layer using either fabric. In the photo above, both lime and aqua are used for a more interesting backing.

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest has featured many patterns from vendors participating in the Craftsy Marketplace, most of which have been deleted by Craftsy. It's going to take awhile for us to hunt down new sources for those patterns. In the meantime there are many links to patterns on our site that no longer work. We apologize if this article contains one or more of those links and appreciate your patience while we straighten things out. Thank you!

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest does not sell or otherwise provide patterns directly. We showcase patterns and projects from various vendors, bloggers and other sources. Please make a note of where you access a pattern (the link in the yellow box toward the end of each Quilting Digest article). That way you can contact Support for that source if you have downloading problems or other issues. Thank you!
