Speed Piece Half-Square Triangles with No Two Alike
Perfect for Truly Scrappy Quilts!
While there are a number of proven methods for making half-square triangles (HSTs), they all have one thing in common – you end up with two or more HSTs that are exactly the same.
That works for many quilt designs. However, sometimes you want all the HSTs to be different. This ingenious method allows you to do that without wasting fabric. It’s perfect for truly scrappy quilts.

Beth Helfter of EvaPaige Quilt Designs has developed the Accordion Sewn HSTs™ method for those instances when you want every unit to be different. It’s simple to do and a great technique to have in your toolbox.

Beth recommends trimming the finished HSTs, therefore she starts with fabric squares that are a half inch larger than she wants the finished HSTs to be. For example, for 3 1/2″ square HSTs she starts with 4″ squares.

For trimming Beth prefers the Clearly Perfect Slotted Trimmers. These ruler have slots that allow you to cut off the dog ears. If those don’t bother you, any ruler with 1/2″ increments on the right angles will work (like this one).
