Hand Sew More Smoothly with the Right Needles
The Type and Size Can Make a Big Difference!
Have you ever found yourself wondering which hand sewing needle to choose for a project? Or, do you tend to use the same needle style and size for everything?
Just as with machine sewing, using the right needle can make a world of difference. A needle that’s right for the project will glide through the fabric, won’t bend and will be relatively easy to thread. Most of all, it will feel comfortable to work with.

The correct size is important, too. The finer and thinner the fabric, the finer the needle. Just keep in mind that:
“… the larger the number on the package, the finer/smaller the needle will be. This is the opposite of the needles you purchase for your sewing machine.” – Judy Reed
There are so many styles and sizes of needles available for hand sewing that it can be a challenge to determine what will be best for your project. Fortunately, Judy Reed has written an excellent article for Connecting Threads that will make it easier to choose.
She specifically outlines common needles used by quilters. Keep in mind that in the end the right needle is the one you like best for the job. However, Judy’s article can help you narrow down the choices.
The needle types she discusses can be found at the following links:
If you find it difficult to thread a needle, here’s an inexpensive package of 50 highly rated needle threaders. If one bends or breaks (as needle threaders commonly do), just toss it and start with another.
