Make Charming Angels From Old Jean Pockets
Give Them Any Personality by Playing with Options!
Pockets from old jeans can be easily made into charming angel ornaments. Their shabby chic look will be lovely on a Christmas tree, tucked into a wreath or centerpiece, or as part of a bunting hung from the fireplace.
While they’re perfect for Christmas decor, they’re also nice gifts for angel lovers – or just about anyone. Make a few up for Christmas gifts, birthdays, new babies, graduations, anniversaries, and even in memory of someone special (using their old jeans).
The pretty angel above was originally posted to Facebook by Re-Scape Inspired Recycling (the post is found here). We love the wooden stars, spots of red, and how the pocket flairs out to create wings.
While no pattern is available they did provide these instructions:
“No instructions butTake a denim pocketTwineLittle wood craft ballSome raffia, moss, yarn or straw for hairCinch the pocket 1/3 of the way down with twine and tie in a bowGlue hair to top of wood and a little trim such as ribbon to bottom for collarPress back the top of pocket and tack in back with a stitch or twoGlue head on top and trim with findings/stars/ glitter/ old tiny bead strands….whatever suits your fancy!”
You can easily customize the angels with your own special touches. A second version, by Marianne Didden from Nana’s Notables (shown above and at the top of the page), shows the top flair of the pockets appearing as halos. Strips of burlap and lace produce wings. Smaller heads contribute to the different look.
The cute angel shown above, by Ann from The Apple Street Cottage, is a bit simpler and just as appealing. A bit of lace for a belt, a shiny scrapbook embellishment halo, and a red flower complete the look.
Ann has provided a tutorial to help you get started. Be sure to look it over for helpful tips regardless of how you plan to style yours.
To make your own use small wooden balls for the heads and play with other embellishments, such as wooden stars, heart-shaped wooden buttons, lace, and whatever else appeals to you. You could even add a fabric scrap apron or fabric wings if you’re so inclined.
Twine looks great with denim, or consider ribbon or lace for the waist. A glue gun is used for construction. Also, add a hanging loop or not, depending on how you plan to use the angels.
The size of the completed angels will vary depending on the heights of the pockets.
