Quilters of All Skill Levels Can Benefit From These Ideas!

Borders frame the center design of a quilt and make it larger. While they seem simple, there are a few things to keep in mind when cutting and applying them. You don’t want the borders to overpower the center of the quilt or to end up wavy.

Allison Gemm from American Patchwork & Quilting created an excellent video with great tips for creating beautiful borders. First, she discusses proportions and provides guidelines for determining the best border widths for various quilt sizes. This is especially helpful if you want to make a quilt larger by increasing the size of the border.

She goes on to outline how to determine how long to cut your border fabric for borders that lay flat and smooth. She also provides several helpful tips for sewing the borders on. You’ll find all of her great tips in the following video.

You’ll find a written transcript of the video here.

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest has featured many patterns from vendors participating in the Craftsy Marketplace, most of which have been deleted by Craftsy. It's going to take awhile for us to hunt down new sources for those patterns. In the meantime there are many links to patterns on our site that no longer work. We apologize if this article contains one or more of those links and appreciate your patience while we straighten things out. Thank you!

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest does not sell or otherwise provide patterns directly. We showcase patterns and projects from various vendors, bloggers and other sources. Please make a note of where you access a pattern (the link in the yellow box toward the end of each Quilting Digest article). That way you can contact Support for that source if you have downloading problems or other issues. Thank you!
