This Easy Flannel Rag Quilt is So Adaptable
Make It Any Size You Want!
Rag quilts are so easy to make and super cuddly when done. Plus, both kids and adults love them. Simply choose fabric in colors the owner will love.
Flannel is perfect since it frays easily, but quilting cottons and even soft denim also work. This pretty child’s quilt is made with batting in the center but a layer of fleece or flannel will go more quickly. They can be cut the same size as the quilt’s front and back squares with no fear of batting showing when the blocks are sewn together (although cotton batting will fit right in with the “rag” edges).
Cut the squares whatever size you want. Those for the quilt above were trimmed to 6 1/2 inches after layering. Then, sew layered squares together, with all the seam allowances showing on the top. A half-inch seam allowance frays more nicely than 1/4″, so go bigger for this quilt.
Quilt by Sheila Yee made from 10″ squares.
Snip the seam allowances so they’ll fray in the wash and create the “rag” effect. While scissors work, fabric snips (like these) are much easier on the hands.
