Achieve Flat, Smooth Borders Every Time!

Do you find yourself rushing through the borders just to have a quilt top done? Don’t. After all the time you’ve put into creating the top, it pays to spend a little extra time to achieve flat, smooth borders.

Sherri, from A Quilting Life, has written an excellent article about borders. She provides many tips to help you get precise borders that fit and lay perfectly without waving.

Tips for Producing Better Quilt Borders

Start with the length and measure each end and across the middle. Average the three numbers to determine how long to cut the side borders. Attach the strips, then repeat the process for the borders along the short ends.

Sherri also covers how to attach the borders and press them, and then goes on to discuss fabric selection for borders (what do you want to emphasize?).

While this may all sound like what you already know, there are many unexpected tips in this article, even for experienced quilters.

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest has featured many patterns from vendors participating in the Craftsy Marketplace, most of which have been deleted by Craftsy. It's going to take awhile for us to hunt down new sources for those patterns. In the meantime there are many links to patterns on our site that no longer work. We apologize if this article contains one or more of those links and appreciate your patience while we straighten things out. Thank you!

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest does not sell or otherwise provide patterns directly. We showcase patterns and projects from various vendors, bloggers and other sources. Please make a note of where you access a pattern (the link in the yellow box toward the end of each Quilting Digest article). That way you can contact Support for that source if you have downloading problems or other issues. Thank you!
