Pretty Patchwork Trivets Are a Breeze to Make

Leftovers from your scrap bag will quickly come together into pretty trivets for protecting your table from hot dishes. Rickrack finishes the edges beautifully while hanging loops make them easy to hang in a handy place.

Select 6 fabrics that work well together for each trivet. They can be your own combination or from a coordinated fabric line.

These are so easy to stitch together. The biggest challenge will be having the points all meet nicely in the center. If they don’t, and if that bothers you, consider machine appliqueing a small circle of fabric in the center to cover the points (and pat yourself on the back for giving the trivet your own special design twist!).

While the instructions don’t call for it, we recommend adding a layer of Insul-Bright batting (get it here) for additional heatproofing.

Quilting in concentric circles is easy to do with your walking foot and attached spacing bar. Or, draw the circles on the trivet first using your favorite fabric marker.

Each trivet, from designer designer Alicia Thommas, is about  10″ in diameter, excluding the rick rack. These also make great oversized hot pads.
