How to Make a Pieced Scrappy Binding
A Beautiful Finishing Touch and a Wonderful Use of Scraps!
Have you ever noticed how a pieced binding can make a quilt? A scrappy pieced binding is easy to do and can turn a nice quilt into something special. The extra time spent is well worth it for the beautiful results that can be achieved. Plus, scrappy bindings help to keep your stash of leftovers manageable.
You can use scraps left from the quilt itself or those that match the general color scheme. You can even use bits of binding left over from other projects.
How you construct the binding depends on how big the scraps are that you’ll be using. Those longer than 6″ can be joined on the diagonal, which produces less bulky seams. Scraps shorter than 6″ will need to be joined end to end.
The quilt itself may dictate which method to use. Will the quilt look better with diagonal seams than with end-to-end seams? This can be a factor when using striped and other directional fabrics. In the end, it’s up to you which method is best for each quilt, provided the length of your scraps gives you the choice.
