Make a Charming Easter Basket from Scraps
Or Select a Honey Bun for Easy Color Coordination!
Strips of fabric in spring colors are wrapped around cotton cord to make a charming Easter basket. It will be a lovely addition to your spring decor.
The basket will be nice in colors for other seasons, as well. We can easily imagine it in holiday fabrics and filled with greens for a pretty centerpiece. Or, make it up in your favorite colors for storage in the sewing room.
The designer used a honey bun (a pack of 1 1/2″ strips). However, this is a great project for leftover strips from your scrap bin. The strips don’t have to be all the same exact width, either, making it easy to use up leftovers. Or, cut yardage to the width you want.

Cotton cord in two sizes is used for the core of the basket:
- A package of piping (6yards) – 12/32″ cotton filler cord
- 39 inches of smaller piping (for the handle) – 6/32″ cotton filler cord
Cotton clothesline will work, too.
While the designer stitched her basket together by hand, much of it can also be done by machine. You’ll find instructions here. You can also use a hot glue gun and eliminate the sewing, like in the version below with braided handles from allParenting (instructions here).
