Make a Beautiful Quilt from This Vintage Block

The Block Provides Many Design Options!
One simple vintage block, “Contrary Wife”, was used to make this charming lap quilt. Notice how sashing and diamond cornerstones turn four blocks into a lovely star shape.
Of course, any color theme will be lovely in the block (and the quilt). And, since the block finishes at 12″, it can be used in many types of projects.
The block is simple to make using squares and half-square triangles. The sample from Fat Quarter Shop is made using their Half Square Triangle Paper, but any method for making HSTs will work.
Quilts of any size can be made with the block. We especially like the four-block table quilt. Pam made the lovely example below.
Rachel combined four blocks (without sashing) and added a piano key border (shown below). These examples hint at the many design options that are possible with this classic block.
A demo video and free block pattern are available at the following link (as well as the Triangle Paper and fabric, if still available).
An inexpensive pattern is also available for quilts in four sizes:
- Tabletopper – 30.5″ x 30.5″
- Lap – 62.5″ x 62.5″
- Twin – 62.5″ x 90.5″
- Queen – 94.5″ x 94.5″
