Patchwork and Rick Rack Dress Up Kitchen Towels
Make Matching Pot Holders for an Extra Special Gift!
Transform store-bought kitchen towels into great gifts, as well as lovely accents for your kitchen. A row of simple patchwork and jumbo rick rack make ho-hum towels into something special. Give the towels as is, or use them to wrap up kitchen utensils for an extra treat.
Pull out your scraps, find a selection of fabrics that work well together, and choose rick rack to match. Just be sure to pre-wash the towels, fabric, and rick rack to prevent shrinkage and bleeding of the completed towels (wash the rick rack separately, perhaps in a lingerie bag). The tutorial, from Sew4Home, can be adjusted to fit various-sized towels.
While you have the fabric out, go ahead and make matching pot holders. The tutorial by Jodi Nelson of Pleasant Home is for 6″ x 6″ mug mats, but they can be easily enlarged into pot holders. Simply cut the fabric squares into 2 1/2″ squares to produce 8″ x 8″ potholders. Adjust everything else accordingly and add a layer or two of Insul-Bright batting (find it here) to make them heatproof.
Both of these projects are super simple and can be completed quickly. Wrap them up together for a truly thoughtful and appreciated gift.
