Give the Quilt a Color Theme or Do Anything-Goes Scrappy!

One simple block creates the overall chain design in this beautiful quilt. Reproduction scraps give it an inviting appeal.

The quilt shown below, by Barbara Bellar-Skladoni, uses the “Garlic Knots” block popularized by Bonnie Hunter. It’s a fun block to play with because the blocks can be configured to create several overall designs.

It’s an easy block to make, too, and goes together fairly quickly. The chain layout shown here is wonderful in many color combinations and border treatments.

Instructions for a 6″ block are found in Bonnie’s “Addicted to Scraps” column in the Jan/Feb ’14 issue of Quiltmaker (find it here). See the blocks laid out another way and get instructions for a baby quilt here.

A free pattern for the block, in this case, called “Arrowhead Puzzle”, can be found here. This is for a 12″ block. To convert it to a 6″ block start with 2″ squares instead of 3 1/2″.

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest has featured many patterns from vendors participating in the Craftsy Marketplace, most of which have been deleted by Craftsy. It's going to take awhile for us to hunt down new sources for those patterns. In the meantime there are many links to patterns on our site that no longer work. We apologize if this article contains one or more of those links and appreciate your patience while we straighten things out. Thank you!

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest does not sell or otherwise provide patterns directly. We showcase patterns and projects from various vendors, bloggers and other sources. Please make a note of where you access a pattern (the link in the yellow box toward the end of each Quilting Digest article). That way you can contact Support for that source if you have downloading problems or other issues. Thank you!
