Fold Fabric Into Stars with This Easy Project

They’re a Charming Touch of Whimsy During the Holidays or all Year Long!

Every year at Christmas time my Scandinavian mother-in-law would unpack her collection of folded paper stars to display on the tree and throughout the house. Hers were in Danish red and white and added holiday sparkle and a touch of whimsy wherever they were displayed.

Now we can make the very same stars from fabric. The colors and patterns of strips cut from fabric give the stars a whole new look while being just as charming.

Scandinavian Fabric Stars

Fabric stars are wonderful for the Christmas tree or display them around the home all year around. They also can be attached to a gift or tucked into a card.

You can get the entire family involved in making this easy project. Fold and press 3″ strips like bias tape, then use four of them to fold into a star. Attach a hanging loop of embroidery floss or thin cord with a few hand stitches and step back and admire your new creation.

Vary the size of the stars by changing the width of the strips. Wider and longer strips will produce a larger star.

The pattern seems to originate from Danish blogger Sofie Legarth. Visit her site to see how she attaches a ribbon for hanging.

We discovered three tutorials in English. The first, from Crafting a Rainbow, has several beautiful examples and clear construction photos. The measurements are in centimeters translated to inches.

The second tutorial, from The Knitting Stagehand, provides good instructions and measurements given in inches.

Finally, Erica from Confessions of a Homeschooler has a video tutorial available. Her stars are a little bigger and chunkier but you can make them any size you want.

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest has featured many patterns from vendors participating in the Craftsy Marketplace, most of which have been deleted by Craftsy. It's going to take awhile for us to hunt down new sources for those patterns. In the meantime there are many links to patterns on our site that no longer work. We apologize if this article contains one or more of those links and appreciate your patience while we straighten things out. Thank you!

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest does not sell or otherwise provide patterns directly. We showcase patterns and projects from various vendors, bloggers and other sources. Please make a note of where you access a pattern (the link in the yellow box toward the end of each Quilting Digest article).
