How To Calculate Yardage for Quilt Borders

Congratulations! You have your quilt top pieced and ready for a border. But how much fabric will you need? If the pattern doesn’t say, or if you altered the size of the top, you’ll need to do some math to calculate how much fabric to buy. Don’t worry, it’s easy once you understand how!
Calculating yardage for borders can be a bit mind boggling but Debora at Studio Dragonfly Quilts has put together an excellent guide. She clearly lays out what measurements you need and a couple of yardage options, depending on whether or not you mind having to piece border strips for a larger quilt.
While Debora’s instructions are for one border, once you understand how the calculations work you can easily calculate yardage for additional borders. Just add the finished width of the first border to the overall width and length of the quilt for calculating the second border yardage.
Debora also provides a handy worksheet. Simply print out the PDF and plug in the measurements of the quilt top and border width.
