Stencils Are Great for Both Hand and Machine Quilting!

Whether you quilt by hand, with a walking foot or do free motion quilting, stencils can open up a world of quilting designs. There are hundreds, if not thousands to choose from, and stencils are very reasonably priced. Plus, they can be combined for beautiful effects.

Julie Cefalu from The Crafty Quilter has put together an excellent article about using stencils. She covers all the important aspects, from choosing the right size to fit the space to handling corners.

In her article, Julie walks you through choosing stencils, marking and quilting a small Amish style quilt. You’ll also find a lot of great tips for quilting the designs. She gets her stencils from The Stencil Company. They have a wonderful selection to choose from and also link to other great tutorials (links are in the slideshow at the top of the Home page).

Julie also recommends an article from Fabric Bias for more in-depth info about using stencils for borders and corners. You’ll find it here.

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest has featured many patterns from vendors participating in the Craftsy Marketplace, most of which have been deleted by Craftsy. It's going to take awhile for us to hunt down new sources for those patterns. In the meantime there are many links to patterns on our site that no longer work. We apologize if this article contains one or more of those links and appreciate your patience while we straighten things out. Thank you!

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest does not sell or otherwise provide patterns directly. We showcase patterns and projects from various vendors, bloggers and other sources. Please make a note of where you access a pattern (the link in the yellow box toward the end of each Quilting Digest article). That way you can contact Support for that source if you have downloading problems or other issues. Thank you!
