Save Time and Prevent Frustration by Avoiding These Pitfalls!

A while back allpeoplequilt.com asked their followers what mistakes they’ve made and compiled the responses. The result is a helpful article that outlines several common, and not so common mistakes that quilters have made.

There are many things quilters learn the hard way, like “measure twice, cut once.” While mistakes can be frustrating, they also help us to learn. You’ll find many valuable lessons included on the list.

Lessons Learned the Hard Way from Fellow Quilters

A few of our favorites are:

  • “Don’t buy cheap fabric! You’ll watch blocks shrink right in front of your eyes while pressing.” — Judi S.
  • “Don’t cut your borders until after the center is complete.” — Molly S.
  • “Press material first to remove wrinkles or creases. I cut into my pattern pieces first then pressed out—found it changed the sizes of the cut pieces and had to re-cut.” — Roka R.
  • “Don’t bind the quilt and then quilt the border.” — June S.
  • “Buy a really good seam ripper.” — Helen M.

Take a minute to read through the list. You’re sure to find tips that will make your quilting go more smoothly. And, do you have a “learning moment” of your own you’d like to share? Please leave a comment below so we can learn from it as well.

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest has featured many patterns from vendors participating in the Craftsy Marketplace, most of which have been deleted by Craftsy. It's going to take awhile for us to hunt down new sources for those patterns. In the meantime there are many links to patterns on our site that no longer work. We apologize if this article contains one or more of those links and appreciate your patience while we straighten things out. Thank you!

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest does not sell or otherwise provide patterns directly. We showcase patterns and projects from various vendors, bloggers and other sources. Please make a note of where you access a pattern (the link in the yellow box toward the end of each Quilting Digest article). That way you can contact Support for that source if you have downloading problems or other issues. Thank you!
