It’s Great for Trimming Triangles Away and Much More!

Do you have a lot of units that need to have their seam allowances trimmed back to 1/4″? This most often occurs with flip-and-stitch corners, flying geese units, and when paper piecing, although you may encounter other instances as well (such as cutting apart half-square triangles).

While traditionally you’d trim each one individually, there’s a much quicker way that doesn’t sacrifice accuracy. The secret is to use your cutting mat to line the units up so you can trim several at a time.

Wendy from The Weekend Quilter shows how to do this with paper pieced units. The process works just as well with other units, many of which need triangles trimmed away. Read her great tutorial at the following link.

She has also provided a short video that demonstrates this method with pieced flying geese units. It’s available at the following link.

A tutorial from American Patchwork and Quilting clearly shows how to lay out half-square triangles so they can be cut apart in multiples using the same approach. You’ll find it at the following link.

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest has featured many patterns from vendors participating in the Craftsy Marketplace, most of which have been deleted by Craftsy. It's going to take awhile for us to hunt down new sources for those patterns. In the meantime there are many links to patterns on our site that no longer work. We apologize if this article contains one or more of those links and appreciate your patience while we straighten things out. Thank you!

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest does not sell or otherwise provide patterns directly. We showcase patterns and projects from various vendors, bloggers and other sources. Please make a note of where you access a pattern (the link in the yellow box toward the end of each Quilting Digest article). That way you can contact Support for that source if you have downloading problems or other issues. Thank you!
