Or Start From Scratch with Your Favorite Fabrics!

Leftovers from the “Spinning Wheels” quilt can be made into this pretty table runner. However, you don’t need to make the quilt in order to complete the runner. We’ll show you how to start from scratch with the runner.

It’s a simple runner to make. Just be careful not to stretch the bias edges if you’re using already-cut triangles. That’s not a concern if you’re starting fresh. Either way, you’ll have this finished up before you know it.

Select leftovers from making the quilt or from your stash. The runner will be charming in many color combinations so select fabrics you love.

To make the border you’ll need 12″ strips that are 2 1/2″ wide (jelly roll scraps work great), plus four 2 1/2″ square patches for the corners. You’ll strip piece the jelly roll strips and then cut them apart.

The trickiest part of constructing this without having first made the quilt is that it requires triangles trimmed from making Flying Geese units. If you’re starting from scratch with the runner, the following will work.

You’ll make the center blocks from half-square triangles, which would originally be made from the triangles trimmed from making Flying Geese units. Instead, cut 6 light squares and 6 floral squares cut at 4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″.

Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the back of each light square. Lay a light square, right sides together, on top of a floral square.

Now stitch 1/2″ away on both sides of the drawn line. Notice that says 1/2″, not 1/4″. Cut the squares into two triangular units by trimming 1/4″ away from the center line (which is 1/4″ away from the seam lines). Press the units open and they’ll be half-square triangles. Sew four of them together to make each center block.

Follow the instructions as written from there on to finish up the runner.

Once completed, the runner from Deborah Jacobs of Gathering Friends Quilt Shop is 12 ½” x 26″.

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest has featured many patterns from vendors participating in the Craftsy Marketplace, most of which have been deleted by Craftsy. It's going to take awhile for us to hunt down new sources for those patterns. In the meantime there are many links to patterns on our site that no longer work. We apologize if this article contains one or more of those links and appreciate your patience while we straighten things out. Thank you!

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest does not sell or otherwise provide patterns directly. We showcase patterns and projects from various vendors, bloggers and other sources. Please make a note of where you access a pattern (the link in the yellow box toward the end of each Quilting Digest article). That way you can contact Support for that source if you have downloading problems or other issues. Thank you!
