A Layer of Fusible Vinyl Makes for Easy Cleanup!

When Dori Troutman refurbished a rolling cart for use as a coffee station she decided she wanted a patchwork mat for the top – a waterproof, spill-proof, easy-to-wipe-up patchwork mat.

Her solution was to apply Thermoweb HeatnBond Iron-On Vinyl to both sides of the mat and she loves the results. The mat is charming and water-proof with only a few extra easy steps.

This technique would also work nicely for placemats and other fabric projects you want to protect from moisture and stains. Beach bags and makeup pouches come to mind but you’ll surely think of other creative uses.

The patchwork mat was made with 2 1/2″ squares cut from jelly roll strips, although you can use scraps, a mini charm pack, or even cut up 5″ charm squares. She sewed the squares together by first fusing them to lightweight fusible interfacing. Fusible fleece was used for the batting.

Dori’s completed mat isĀ 22″ x 14″ although you can make yours whatever size you want.

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest has featured many patterns from vendors participating in the Craftsy Marketplace, most of which have been deleted by Craftsy. It's going to take awhile for us to hunt down new sources for those patterns. In the meantime there are many links to patterns on our site that no longer work. We apologize if this article contains one or more of those links and appreciate your patience while we straighten things out. Thank you!

PLEASE NOTE: Quilting Digest does not sell or otherwise provide patterns directly. We showcase patterns and projects from various vendors, bloggers and other sources. Please make a note of where you access a pattern (the link in the yellow box toward the end of each Quilting Digest article). That way you can contact Support for that source if you have downloading problems or other issues. Thank you!
